Call to Real Action is a group of concerned people who put together a response to Manchester City Council’s “Call to Action” at the beginning of the 2009.
We came up with dozens and dozens of things the Council and people of Manchester can do to reduce carbon emissions and prepare for the changes climate change will bring. We were then involved in writing the “Manchester Climate Change Action Plan”.
Now we are focussed on making sure theTuesday November 30th 2010 Stakeholder Conference is a vibrant and innovative space for genuine scrutiny.
“Frequently Asked Questions”
Who are you? Are you Friends of the Earth? Green Party? Someone else?
We aren’t a formal organisation. Although some of us spend time campaigning with Green Party, FOE, SEMA and other groups, the Call to Real Action is not ‘owned’ or funded or controlled by any group.
Who funds you?
Er, would you like to? We got no office, no money. Not that we necessarily need it
What are you trying to achieve?
To help the Council make a really good plan for dealing with Climate Change, and then to implement that plan.
To meet new people and build new relationships.
To have a good time, like we did in the writing and launching of this document!
How do I get involved?
Come to the next meeting. Don’t worry, we don’t bite. Bring a friend if you’re nervous!
If you can’t make that next meeting, email us and we can find tasks for you to do.
We are putting together something that contains a series of actions and targets for the Council and the people of Manchester that we think would properly set us on the road to a low-carbon, high resilience future.
You are welcome to get involved in this process, either by coming to a meeting or sending us an email message, and we can give you some specific tasks to do.
[Please note, we will not be entering into debates onto the reality of man-made climate change. We are too busy doing something hopeful and useful with our time to wallow in denialism, or engage in troll-wars.]
Where did you get that cool banner photo of Manchester’s skyline?
From a local chap called Nigel Woodcock, who is a member of the Green Party and active in Hulme Greens.

C2RA admin- Sorry about that! Have added a paragraph above. Thanks.
Tremendous piece of work. With the funding and staff available to the Local Authority, the ‘powers that be’ – ie every single member of Manchester’s City Council should serve themselves a large portion of humble pie as they read what a group of COMMITTED activists can do in such a short time and with so little by way of resources. Hopefully they will also eat the C2RA as not only a main course but for every course and every meal until they are so full of it they want to burst in a glut-fest of real action on climate.
Now we have to use this useful piece of work as a guide to good practice and get the moving.
Well done all of you.
Hi, Great report. Could you send me the PDF file when it is ready. We are having a meeting of the Chorlton Green Festival organising group on Thursday May 7th, 7.30pm St Clements Church, Chorlton. I would like to circulate your report as we think about next years festival and what we do in the meantime. We want to be build on the festival we held on April 4th 2009 which attracted about 4000 people
Some very realistic, some idealistic proposals. The question is how to implement any of them. Can your group get something concrete started?
Yes we are continuing with the work to influence the council’s Climate Change Action Plan which is to be produced by Nov this year. See details of future meetings
